2. I'd like to try the gauge but I require RPS strings on anything lighter than 09.

I currently am using 08-38 with RPS, (reinforced plain strings.) I find if I don't use RPS, they come unwrapped from the ball end before long. I played 11s for decades and my left hand is very strong. I haven't had an RPS ever come loose. The 08s make a big difference in how long I'm able to play.
