She didn't know what it was, but a few years later saw one of the first television documentaries about it. She told us about it, and I think the experience explains why her behavior changed. I was all for her living for herself and loved that she got a chance to be herself and not just Mom.
To go from esoteric to reality, maybe you would benefit from having a portable bed rail. You can get an adjustable metal rail. Part of it slides under the mattress to hold it in place. I had one for my mom, and she used it to pull herself up. Or a clothes rack
