9. I remember the first time Bumpers ran for governor

That was in 1970, when he was running against then-Governor Winthrop Rockefeller. Even though Rockefeller was a Republican, he was a progressive in the style of Robert LaFollette. So, it was kind of a win-win situation. Bumpers won, then 4 years later he challenged the esteemed J. William Fulbright in the Democratic primary for the US Senate, and won. He went on to become a very admired US Senator.

I met him once, at a Jefferson-Jackson Day picnic in Little Flock (a small community in Benton County), and was really impressed with the man. He served Arkansas well.
