and NC was getting more purple by the mid-2000s with the influx of a lot of northerners either working in the Research Triangle (including pharma and banking industries, etc.), as well as getting some northern snowbirds retiring there (they did vote for Obama in 2008). But then I think they were also getting an influx from further south like FL, and that seemed to counter the blue shift (although they have been able to maintain a Democrat for governor... It's just that they so nastily gerrymandered there that Dems couldn't get much of a foothold in the legislature.
