GOP Senator Says He Opposes Any Trump Crackdown in His State: 'It'll Be a Problem for Me'

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) was blunt when asked about the possibility that President Donald Trump might send federal troops into Charlotte, North Carolina in the wake of a brutal murder on one of the citys light rail trains, saying that it would be a problem for him. The Trump administration has controversially deployed federal agents in several U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Chicago, claiming it was necessary to fight crime.
Local and state officials have publicly denounced the federal crackdown, but thus far the elected representatives from these areas speaking out in opposition have been mostly Democrats like D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. Charlotte has been in the headlines after Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed to death on a train, the shocking and seemingly random crime captured by the trains security cameras.
The man arrested for her murder, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., had a long criminal history, including violent crimes like robbery with a deadly weapon, and a diagnosis of schizophrenia, according to police. Trump has cited Zarutskas murder as an example of Democrat-run cities that set loose savage, bloodthirsty criminals to prey on innocent people, and called for a vicious law and order response. Other Republican politicians and conservative media outlets have also pointed to this incident to argue in support of the presidents agenda, including further federal deployments in U.S. cities.
Tillis, who has represented North Carolina in the U.S. Senate for a decade after serving in the state legislature, was asked about the possibility the Trump administration might crack down on Charlotte by NOTUS reporter Helen Huiskes, and was unequivocally opposed to the idea.

This is the latest "Ashley Babbitt-style" manufactured outrage being generated by RW loonosphere while the 45 administration is preparing to DEPORT Ukrainian refugees, and pulling away support from the country. They are trotting out the tried-and-true RW racist trope of "the black man killing the white woman", while bragging about cutting funds for mental health services. Don't fall for their hype.

We are a very bluish purple state. And many of us don't think he won our state.

(38,621 posts)It seems that the cities of NC are trying hard to change their political leadership and it just may happen.
Come on, North Carolina Democrats! Put this guy out to pasture and elect a real Senator.

(160,069 posts)and NC was getting more purple by the mid-2000s with the influx of a lot of northerners either working in the Research Triangle (including pharma and banking industries, etc.), as well as getting some northern snowbirds retiring there (they did vote for Obama in 2008). But then I think they were also getting an influx from further south like FL, and that seemed to counter the blue shift (although they have been able to maintain a Democrat for governor... It's just that they so nastily gerrymandered there that Dems couldn't get much of a foothold in the legislature.

If all those rich Republicans down in Charlotte get mad at the Trump administration Cooper will win in a blowout.
Trump is already making everybody in western NC mad and that's hurting the Republicans too. Even our other useless senator Ted Budd mumbled something at Trump recently.

(5,194 posts)are vile people, but Tillis at least seems to realize what he does is vile. I wouldn't bet on Western NC voting swinging away from MAGA, they are masters of voting against their own best interests. They supported Jesse Helms for decades despite all the damage he did to poor Whites.
