It's one thing to have republicans shut down the government... or even for democrats to allow it to be shut down by just not supporting a bill...

... but it's another thing to cause the shutdown by filibustering. It makes it hard to point fingers at the other side

It all depends on how offensive the republican bill is. If they're just proposing a "clean" CR that extends things 'till their next reconciliation window... it will be tough for Schumer to block. But they're likely to try for much more.
