"TEL AVIV Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus far-right government voted unanimously Monday to dismiss his attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara, the chief prosecutor in his ongoing corruption case, as he faces growing criticism inside Israel and U.S. impatience over his governments management of the war in Gaza.
The vote to remove Baharav-Miara, a frequent challenger of the governments policies, marks one of the most significant steps in Netanyahus years-long effort to remake the countrys judiciary. It is also expected to lead to a confrontation between the elected government and Israels Supreme Court, which will review and rule on the legality of Baharav-Miaras removal. Immediately after the vote on Monday evening, the opposition party Yesh Atid filed a petition to block the move.
... The cabinet vote is taking place as our hostages are dying in the tunnels, as Israeli society is tearing itself apart, said Yair Golan, an Israeli opposition politician, at a demonstration outside of the Knesset on Monday afternoon. He was referring to the dozens of hostages who are still languishing in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
... Israels government, Golan said, is not dealing with freeing the hostages, ending the war
it is not bothered with Israels safety.
