Netanyahu government votes to dismiss attorney general

Source: WaPo

"TEL AVIV — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government voted unanimously Monday to dismiss his attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara, the chief prosecutor in his ongoing corruption case, as he faces growing criticism inside Israel and U.S. impatience over his government’s management of the war in Gaza.

The vote to remove Baharav-Miara, a frequent challenger of the government’s policies, marks one of the most significant steps in Netanyahu’s years-long effort to remake the country’s judiciary. It is also expected to lead to a confrontation between the elected government and Israel’s Supreme Court, which will review and rule on the legality of Baharav-Miara’s removal. Immediately after the vote on Monday evening, the opposition party Yesh Atid filed a petition to block the move.

... The cabinet vote is taking place “as our hostages are dying in the tunnels, as Israeli society is tearing itself apart,” said Yair Golan, an Israeli opposition politician, at a demonstration outside of the Knesset on Monday afternoon. He was referring to the dozens of hostages who are still languishing in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

... Israel’s government, Golan said, “is not dealing with freeing the hostages, ending the war … it is not bothered with Israel’s safety.”

This is uncharted territory afaik. And would the military, Shin Bet, and union stand with him or the court?

This rat has been under investigation for corruption for over a decade. No more delays. It needs to end now.

Immediately after the decision, however, opposition party Yesh Atid and activist groups filed urgent petitions to Israel’s High Court of Justice seeking to halt the dismissal.

In response, the court issued an injunction suspending the decision and preventing the Government from appointing a substitute.

It announced it would hear further petitions against the sacking in the following 30 days.

Baharav-Miara has been at loggerheads with the Government since it took office, challenging the legality of some of Netanyahu’s decisions, most recently his attempt in May to fire the head of the Shin Bet security agency, Ronen Bar.

Bar’s agency has been conducting an investigation into illicit payments from Qatar to some of Netanyahu’s close aides, a case known in the Israeli press as “Qatargate”. His firing has been viewed as a political move.

"The reason for this is simple: Netanyahu not only presided over the worst security failure in Israel’s history but has actively governed against the will of the country’s majority. He and his allies received just 48.4 percent of the vote in late 2022. Still, the Israeli leader did not seek to unite a polarized population by pivoting to the center. Instead he cobbled together a sectarian coalition with unpopular extremist constituencies: far-right messianic settlers and the ultra-Orthodox. Because the votes of both of these groups are necessary for the government to remain in power, they have been able to extort Netanyahu for ever-expanding giveaways and political gains. The result: On core issue after issue, Netanyahu has been the prime minister for the 30 percent..."

Negotiations over a Gaza ceasefire appear to have reached an end — or at least a point of extreme brinkmanship — as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated he plans to expand military operations to occupy the entire Gaza Strip.

In a statement released by his office, Netanyahu said he would convene his security cabinet this week to “direct the [Israel Defense Forces] how to achieve the three war objectives we have set … defeating the enemy, releasing our hostages and ensuring that Gaza will never again threaten Israel.”

An Israel official said that discussions with the Trump administration over the decision were ongoing. “There is a growing understanding that Hamas is not interested in a deal,” said the official, one of several people familiar with details of sensitive decision-making on Gaza who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The White House did not respond to questions on the Israeli plans, and declined to expand on comments Saturday by Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s special envoy on the negotiations. Witkoff told hostage families in Tel Aviv that his proposal for a temporary ceasefire and the return of about half of 20 living Israeli hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza “doesn’t work and we’ve tried everything.”
