They held what they called "operational luncheons." These were supposedly held by bringing A LOT of food and alcohol into the SCIF at RAF Gatow so you could talk shop over a cold one. The real purpose was to get drunk off your ass and tell the filthiest jokes you could think of, but I guess there was some talking shop in there before the drink took hold.

Anyway, during one of them the commander of 13 Signals Regiment got totally wasted then approached one of our number and told him that "you bloody Yanks are lucky to have a flag that's impossible to accidentally fly upside down." Turns out that about once a week he'd have to send two troops outside to lower the flag in front of his headquarters, turn it over and put it back up because the flag detail flew it upside down.

So...flying the British flag upside down is not unheard of. Given that, it's kinda strange that a government operation like the White House that has a protocol office would do it.
