After saying farewell to President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump on April 30, the King, 77, and Queen, 78, visited the military cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, to pay their respects at one of the United States' most significant sites of military remembrance.
There, the royals laid a wreath and posy at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to honor the fallen and the military partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States, but a problem was spotted with the Union Jack flag on parade there.
The national flag of the U.K. featured in the King and Queen's escort was flown upside down.
Britain's Flag Institute explains that there is a correct way to raise the national emblem. To fly the Union Jack in the proper position, "in the half of the flag nearest the flagpole, the wider diagonal white stripe must be above the red diagonal stripe, as Scotland's St. Andrew's Cross takes precedence over Ireland's St. Patrick's Cross.".....
The flag mishap was the second such snafu to make waves during King Charles and Queen Camilla's state visit to the U.S. this week to commemorate America's 250th anniversary of independence.
On April 24, the Friday before the trip kicked off, ABC News reporter James Longman said that Australian flags were briefly raised alongside American flags on the light posts lining a major thoroughfare of Washington, D.C., the King and Queen's first major stop stateside.
"For about two hours, they put the Australian flag up alongside the Stars and Stripes I think they realized their mistake, and they've replaced them now with the Union Jack," Longman said in a video shared to Instagram.

Flying the Union Jack upside down is considered a sign of distress or a serious insult to the Crown.

I learned this as a kid in England and yeah, I know it's subtle but they are supposed to get things right.
Celerity
(54,790 posts)I am a lefty (politically) and want us to be on top of the right wing (so I look to the top left of the flag), and we should also have more power than the cross/religion (ie push down on and place a check against the power of religion, which is represented in this case, thematically, by the red cross diagonal line inside the top left quadrant of focus).
Also, the top left is where the 50 stars are on the US flag, so that is another way to remember what part of the Union Jack to focus upon. Then just remember the red diagonal cross line (ie the representaion of religion for me in my mental construction) is pushed down more on the top left when the UJ is correctly flown.

It's like St. Patrick's cross is "wound a little counterclockwise" so that the centerlines do not match those of the St. Andrew's cross -- a case of "symmetry breaking", which reduces the point group symmetry from potentially D2 to C2 -- there is a two-fold axis perpendicular to the plane, but none within the plane, and NO mirror planes.
I'd go a little easy on the soldier who didn't see that (and you know it was someone low on the chain of command who ultimately mounted the thing).

(6,530 posts)to be more upset about than something as banal as this. How many would even have noticed if it hadn't been pointed out?

But theyre intelligent enough to not make a stink about it.
How would you feel if the Canadian flag was flown upside down in Washington?
Disaffected
(6,530 posts)as the flag is very close to symmetrical and even if they did notice, they wouldn't care as it is a mistake easily made, also because the flag is almost symmetrical.
The Canadian flag is not symmetrical but, even if it was accidently flown upside down, folks here would likely laugh rather than be offended.
Pro tip: Most countries, including Canada, do not get their jingoistic tights in a knot over trivial flag indiscretions.

King Charles III endured another diplomatic gaffe during his visit to the United States.

The 77-year-old monarch wrapped up his visit with a trip across Virginia, but sharp-eyed observers noticed American service members were holding an up-side down British flag as the king and his wife, Queen Camilla, visited Arlington National Cemetery, reported the Express.
"Rather a diplomatic [gaffe] by the Americans here," noted Sky News correspondent Mark Stone. "The Union flag is upside down at the Arlington Cemetery event."
Officials in Washington, D.C., had already included 15 Australian flags by mistake alongside British and American banners ahead of the king's visit, and critics called the latest blunder unacceptable.
"Oh F--! I take it the American flag has that little box of stars in the corner so you know which way to hang it up???" wondered historian Andy Gabriel-Powell. "Even at Arlington, the most solemn of places, you STILL couldn't get ours right. (It's upside down)."

(53,331 posts)They held what they called "operational luncheons." These were supposedly held by bringing A LOT of food and alcohol into the SCIF at RAF Gatow so you could talk shop over a cold one. The real purpose was to get drunk off your ass and tell the filthiest jokes you could think of, but I guess there was some talking shop in there before the drink took hold.
Anyway, during one of them the commander of 13 Signals Regiment got totally wasted then approached one of our number and told him that "you bloody Yanks are lucky to have a flag that's impossible to accidentally fly upside down." Turns out that about once a week he'd have to send two troops outside to lower the flag in front of his headquarters, turn it over and put it back up because the flag detail flew it upside down.
So...flying the British flag upside down is not unheard of. Given that, it's kinda strange that a government operation like the White House that has a protocol office would do it.
