(7,857 posts)It's infuriating what they've been able to get away with... with absolutely no accountability. Our current cases not withstanding, if it's a sex scandal (especially a same-sex scandal) it'll be a repug involved. If it's corruption and/or grift, it's more like to be a Repug. Influence peddling I've always seen as inherently Repug.
And man, do I agree with you on the Clinton years. Clinton wasn't one of my all-time favorite presidents, but the repugs went way over the line. And with Obama's tan suit, they lost their veritable little minds. But that's where they live... in the reaction to shallow things. Not in those that require deep reflection -- they can't (or won't) do that -- it's too hard. Better on those things to be TOLD what to do by their favorite daddy figure of the moment.
The one mindset I hope we can rid ourselves of this time... once and hopefully forever... is this "move on to get along"... and let the consequences fall where they will. From the point where Govt becomes ours again and (hopefully) forevermore, may each individual reap the accountability of his actions. If this is done enough, and it becomes clear and obvious there's one party more egregious than others, tear up their charters to operate in the U.S. Nixon should NEVER have been pardoned. Reagan should have been booted from office the minute it was clear he was fading into dementia. Perhaps we should add an upper age limit to holding the presidency, tho there are plenty of people as old and older than I am that I think has the clarity of mind and strength of body that I lack at this age. So, although the Constitution says 'No tests'... maybe that's one we ought to rethink.
Truth is, we'll only have a limited amount of time to make changes once the Tangerine is out of office - by death or by crook. Our problem is we move WAY too slow as a nation. One small change can take decades to fully implement. By then, people forget who brought up the idea, ushered it through congress, signed into law, and all accountability gets washed into the ether. This I see as one of the main drawbacks we have, and the adherence to or refusal to allow it rests truly rests with the American people -- not just the politicians.
