WASHINGTON (WCSC) — President Trump declared COVID-19 a national emergency under the National Emergencies Act on March 13, 2020.

As part of the announcement, the administration issued a travel ban on non-U.S. citizens traveling from 26 European countries.

The administration said the action could make up to $50 billion in federal assistance available for response efforts.

At the time of the declaration, Johns Hopkins University reported more than 2,100 cases in the country.

By mid-2023, when agencies stopped comprehensive reporting, between 103 million and 111 million cases had been reported in the United States.
