https://www.live5news.com/2026/03/13/this-day-history-march-13-2020-trump-administration-declares-covid-19-national-emergency/WASHINGTON (WCSC) President Trump declared COVID-19 a national emergency under the National Emergencies Act on March 13, 2020.
As part of the announcement, the administration issued a travel ban on non-U.S. citizens traveling from 26 European countries.
The administration said the action could make up to $50 billion in federal assistance available for response efforts.
At the time of the declaration, Johns Hopkins University reported more than 2,100 cases in the country.
By mid-2023, when agencies stopped comprehensive reporting, between 103 million and 111 million cases had been reported in the United States.

(113,734 posts)clinicians worldwide) and seeing reports of the first cases in December 2019, by late in the month and early January, 2020 it was clear this was moving toward pandemic. I saved some of the messages on the hard drive I took from my now defunct older laptop.
Looking back (and this from someone who is well-versed in the detailed history of the Spanish flu and other pandemics) I still can scarcely believe all that happened and how quickly people now deny what happened (and why).
To all who suffered (and that includes a LOT of colleagues) as well as my ER nurse sister who still suffers from long COVID, I send my regrets to you and hope that health is restored sooner than later and that we learn more about long COVID to respond more effectively.. To those who lost family members who they could not even visit before passing in the ERs and ICUs or our nation's hospitals, may you somehow find peace for what is lost.
And to all who learned nothing but conspiracy theories and false narratives/memes about vaccines, masks, immune response, unproven medications, and public health, may you do no more harm to a vulnerable public. The next time, may you find some damned wisdom within and learn who to listen to and who you most certainly do not. There will be a next time and I fear without the early warning surveillance or rapid response from the vaccine researchers and public health professionals now defunded. sigh...
