I hung back silently and waited.

I suppose my father had time to consider the prospective fractures in his marriage to my mother when she would discover his treachery. And it wouldn't be good.

I didn't contact the law school to advise that I had to drop out b/c of the tuition issue.

Three days before the first class of orientation, my father let me know that I could pick up the check. Which I did.

I went through three grueling years of law school, taking six checks from my father with a cursory "Thank you".

I did tell my mother what happened and it shocked her to no end.

At my graduation, my entire family was dour. I didn't care. I graduated.

My father met his karma in 2014. He rear-ended a van at a gas pump. His car was older and didn't have an air bag. His chest hit the steering column. He refused medical attention. And he certainly didn't tell me or my siblings about the accident. For a week, he had an undiagnosed slow bleed into his chest b/c of a partially dissected aorta due to the trauma. And he died of a heart attack as a result. (And yes, I would have helped him had I known.)
