(1,934 posts)I grew up in Indiana, which is a very red state, with vestiges of the KKK mindset still lurking (one of the most powerful branches of the Klan was in Indiana). Yet, with all of that, Obama won Indiana in 2008. Think of that, a black Democrat won in a red state like Indiana. Why is that? Because Obama was such an effective communicator. Obama also had a way of making others feel as if they belonged, as if they were part of something bigger than themselves. In a negative way, Trump achieved the same with MAGA.
To quote President Johnson: If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you. I think that's the MAGA mindset. Though no longer limited to blacks only. Women, brown people, LGBTQ, etc.
