People may be misreading what appears to be a goodwill message from Trump to Ukraine [View all]

Yes, Trump seems on the surface to be expressing a desire to see Ukraine keep fighting, maybe even reclaim its lost territory. And he seems to hint at internal problems within Russia and its economy.

But he doesn’t give any specific proposals about the US continuing to help Ukraine.

Rather, all he says is that the US will provide weapons to NATO countries, and if those countries want to help Ukraine, they are more than welcome to do so.

But he’s essentially washing his own hands of responsibility or further action on the part of the US.

This seems to be underscored by his “Good luck to all” at the end.

Basically he appears to be saying, “Ukraine, if you want to keep fighting for your country, you can. And maybe Europe will help you. But you’re not my problem. Good luck storming the castle!”
