If anything, it makes him look worse.

A narcissist can be sympathetic in a limited selfish sense, imagining how they would feel in a certain situation, and they can even feign sympathy in situations where they themselves would feel nothing.

But empathy is largely beyond them, which is why Kirk was uncomfortable with the word.
