Any agreement between Ukraine and the US likely wouldn’t be recognized by Russia.

My understanding is the US only has rights to extract minerals from existing Ukrainian mines, 90% of which are currently in Donetsk, under Russian occupation. Ukraine would have to regain control of the region before the US could exercise its rights under the agreement.

If my understanding is correct, that makes Zelensky one shrewd negotiator.

Ukraine retains complete control over mineral deposits in the unoccupied north and west, which have yet to be mined, and are reportedly rich in rare earth metals necessary for today’s Technology.
