I was 1A directly out of high school (pre-lottery) and was a conscientious objector which did me no good since I wasn't associated with a church. I decided to enlist in the USAF to avoid going to Viet Nam and it worked.

My father served in Italy during WWII and survived. My mother's first husband was killed in the Battle of the Bulge.
