Minneapolis Metrodome Roof Collapses. |
|
Just heard on WCCO radio. The snow along with the wind has damaged part of the Metrodome's roof, and it has deflated. This may make the shift of the Giants v. Vikings game to Monday a moot point. Now, they'll start talking even harder about building a freaking new $1 billion stadium for boys to throw the pigskin around in - at taxpayer's expense. Feh!

1. Maybe they can play elsewhere? |
|
They could play in a suitable venue outside, in the snow. Like they did in the old days.

2. TCF Stadium at the U of M. Brand new. |
|
Given the weather, they wouldn't have to worry about seating all the fans, either. It's an option.

I apparently misheard the first report this morning -- I just heard a longer report that said the dome collapsed around 5 am. It also said they had to give up trying to keep the snow off last night because conditions were too dangerous.

5. Designers didn't plan on snow in Minnesota? |
|
"It's the same design of the original AstroDome in Houston! What could possibly go wrong?!"

down for now. They'll fix it, and it'll be back up. Insignificant thing, really, in the larger scheme.

7. It's an air-supported roof. The Houston Astrodome is a rigid structure... |
|
Not even close to being the same design...

the point being seems you'd plan on the weight of snow and ice when building a dome in Minneapolis, not so much a concern in Houston. Maybe the Astrodome would have held up?

9. We had the same problem with the Carrier Dome back in 1993.... |
|
...which is of the same design as the Metrodome. It's an economincal design to provide shelter to sports patrons, but certainly not a perfect one.

10. Whose dumbass idea was it to put a domed stadium in an area that gets a lot of snow |
|
Domes should only be put in cities with decent weather like Atlanta and Phoenix.

16. No, the Vikings don't have a new stadium... |
|
But the lease is up next season so the debate will escalate now (it was going to, but this will be used to make it worse).
Yes, you're right - the Twins have a new stadium (they used to play in the Metrodome too).
The Univ. of MN Gophers also have a new stadium on campus (used to play in the Metrodome).
MN Timberwolves have their own in downtown Minneapolis.
MN Wild have theirs in downtown St. Paul (Norm Coleman would interject here, "thanks to me! I brought hockey back to Minnesota! I am so wonderful.").

19. The L. A. Vikings sounds really good to me. |
|
The name has a ring to it, don't you think?
And all the fans can watch the games on their big-screen TVs. Me? I'll be doing something else. Professional football is boring. I like watching high school and college football, but NFL Football is like watching a garage mechanic work.
Screw 'em, especially if they want my tax dollars for a stadium I'll never see the inside of. No, thank you very much.
