at a fallen soldier's funeral. Every redneck/peace activist/biker/veteran within a 50-mile radius showed up to ensure there was no disruption to the service. No one from WBC showed up.

If there is one thing that we can all agree on it is the mutual disgust for Fred Phelps and his clan of miscreants...

There's a helluva lot more of us than there is of that crank's den, and that love and peace is almost always a good answer.

I was pleased to see that KSHB, our Kansas City NBC affiliate, mentioned the Phelps protest, but said the station would not be covering them or their protest at Elizabeth's funeral. Apparently this station has decided to take the moral high ground and not give the Phelps cabal the publicity they crave. Kudos to them as well.

Thank you for posting the picture. I wish I hadn't left my camera in the car.

The Westboro contingent was all of 5 strong, and we were well over 200. Every time they spouted off, we drowned them out. We sang "Amazing Grace" and other songs. The police department had a pretty full presence there, including our Chief, right there in uniform with his men.

It didn't take too long for the idiots to give up. They left about 12:30 or so, before the funeral was over, and we disbursed for the most part shortly after. I certainly consider our Line of Love a success in that Elizabeth's family and the other mourners were never molested by these miscreants.

By the way, as a side note, some were wishing "Rolling Thunder" to make an appearance - they were attending our Veteran's Cemetery at the time laying wreaths at the graves of our fallen...

I almost feel like sending a little email or posting something in one of the various right wing forums like our own to say thank you. Their side and ours need to start coming together anyway!

yet, we have a hard time mustering up the energy to protest against the war, guantanamo bay, etc.

we like the stuff that will make us feel good immediately, not the stuff that takes long term commitment.

we are a ridiculous bunch.

What I'm really waiting for is a protest against unbridled capitalism. That encompasses the illegal occupations, the shite economy, worker's rights, women's rights, the lack of universal health care, wage suppression, soaring college costs, how we treat our poor and homeless, the lack of good progressive voices in political candidates, corporatist media, etc, all in one.

The problem is, it couldn't just be in D.C. It's gotta be everywhere and frequently.

Great to see the power of love wins.
