Imagine If This Tax Cut Shit Storm Had Been Blowing Last January |
|
Imagine if the Congressional Ds had had the balls to do something about ending or extending the bush tax cuts back in January or even May or June. Imagine if the broad outlines of the deal were the same then as they are now.
What a GREAT defining moment that would have been for the Ds! What better contrast would have been made for the electorate about which Party had their best interests at heart? Imagine what the tea party types would have been saying as the Rs decided to further bust the budget by giving tax breaks to the rich.
Imagine what the midterm elections would have been about.
But the Ds didn't bring it up. They preferred to hide from their achievements in HCR etc and wouldn't bring the tax cut issue forward even though Obama asked them to.
Do you doubt for a minute that Obama made the case to Ds that this would be a great issue to run on? Do you doubt for a minute that Obama didn't see that as a great opportunity wasted? Do you wonder why he went ahead and made the best deal he could in the waning moments of the year?
I don't.
