Here's how we should respond to the vote on Stupid-pak |
|
1. Support health reform, even if grudgingly, because reform is badly needed. Insurance companies should no longer be allowed to deny coverage to women for being victims of domestic violence for example, or charge women more for being women. These practices would be allowed to continue if health reform were killed. So we are in a no-win situation with respect to women's rights.
2. Primary every one of the dems who voted for Stupid-pak. Maybe we can knock some of them off, maybe we lose a few seats in the process, but we will scare the shit out of them at the very least, and we will let them know the gravity of what they did. The primary system is the only way for progressives to assert ourelves against unresponsive leaders without damaging the progressive agenda as a whole.
(2a. Also primary anyone who has to have their bishop's permission to vote on legislation. WTF is up with that? They represent their constituents not the Catholic Church.)
3. Once the new congress convenes, demand the repeal of Stupid-pak.
4. repeat 1-3 until repeal is successful.

1. I agree with 1. 2 is gonna be hard, because some of them voted for bill. |
|
But I heartily agree with 3 and I plan on writing to all of mine. Every single rep and congresman/woman in New York and a few outside of New YOrk since this is a national issue.
