This referendum is a "people's veto".

The legislature passed, and the governor signed, marriage equality into law. The wingnuts are trying to repeal that law.

If you know someone who voted Yes on Weed and Yes on banning Gay Marriage, tell them to smoke something else.

I hope there's a ballot referendum next year that takes away heterosexuals' right to marry.

My 88 year old father proudly voted NO in Portland today. And so did his good straight friends.

I'll get his take tomorrow, but no doubt many of the same idiots here in CA found their way to Maine. And most of them live in neither place.:argh:

Washington's Referendum 71 -- which asked the state's voters to weigh in on the state's domestic partnership law -- was approved by a narrow 51-49 margin -- meaning same-sex couples get to keep state-granted rights otherwise given only to married couples. That's with 100 percent of the vote counted.

In Maine, a gay rights referendum isn't going quite as well. With 80 percent of the precincts reporting, votes against gay marriage are ahead 52-48. It's still too soon to call ...

And as I've said before, it would encompass far more people who share a household--not just sexual partners, but also close relatives who either by choice or necessity live together and share their lives.

Prop 1 isn't looking very good. 86% of precincts in and it's 53-47 in favor of the bigots. Any Mainers know if there's any chance we'll pull this out? Do more liberal/urban/larger precincts traditionally come in at the end?

Could there be some confusion for the voter who may not be following the issues but is fine with gay marriage?

Why do they have to make these ballots so damn confusing? I think it is a big conspiracy.

Probably plenty of folks voting the wrong way out of confusion on both sides. I mostly just think it's sad that we're putting questions like this up to popular vote in the first place...

It was during the Presidential race and we were asked about Veteran's rights, I believe it was about setting up a special comission to make it easier for Veteran's to recieve all their services. I wanted to agree. But the wording was confusing. I stood there for 20 minute and reread the thing about 7 times before I voted for it (or I think I did). Ultimately I found out I voted correctly when I spoke to one of my friends. However, the wording was out of this world. My sister just gave up and didn't vote for or against in the end because she was worried about the wording. I then I got into a fight with one of the clerks who was rushing me to finish my vote in lieu of others on line (one other person) mind you. So I told her, you're not about to rush me and to back off.

I always thought it was a very progressive state. Guessed wrong.

Remember, it is very, very rural and woodsy and has two Repub Senators (though they are moderates). Last year in CT, we rejected the ability to amend our constitution (to vote on gay marriage). Mass still has gay marriage. But Maine and I would say NH have never been as liberal.

It appears that yes means no. Kind of like Alice in Wonderland. I realize that people should be well informed before voting, but I can understand their confusion. Does Yes mean Yes or does it mean No. Now if No means Yes then Yes must mean No...Oh the hell with it.
