Freshman State Sen. Mick Mulvaney (R-Lancaster) has made it official: he is running for Congress.
Mulvaney released a statement Monday announcing his intention to run for the seat currently held by Democrat John Spratt.
“I’m running for office because John Spratt voted for the Wall Street bailouts, for the government takeover of GM and Chrysler, for Cap-and-Trade, and he supports the government run health care plan now being debated,” Mulvaney said. “Enough is enough. It is time for him to go.”
Word of Mulvaney’s intention to challenge Spratt leaked a month ago.
But Mulvaney, one of Gov. Mark Sanford’s closest political allies, must first win the Republican nomination. And that’s a title that soon-to-be State Rep. Ralph Norman thought would be his in 2012 when Spratt is expected to retire.
Norman was trounced by Spratt in the 2006 general election. But most experts believe a Republican could win the seat against a Democrat other than Spratt, who has served the 5th District for 14 terms.
