1. Poor 21st Century Girl Scouts....
.... and their boring, bland khakis.

I used to ROCK some green polyester back in the day! ..... With ALL of my badges and medals ..... I looked like a little green MacArthur. ALWAYS got my picture in the paper that way.

I have always liked to accessorize. :)

29. I still have my brownie buttons (pins)
I joined the brownies for about a month, moved up to the girl scouts and then quit. I didn't like the teacher over the scouts and I guess I was too much of a rebel to belong to that group anyway.

4. Is it anything like the boyscouts?
I've heard that the boyscouts has a lot of religious hoo-hah. Which, don't get me wrong I generally support religious hoo-hah if it encourages an open mind (to science and ideas), tolerance, and public works... but religious hoo-hah belongs in churches, temples, mosques, etc.

13. lol dont you get me started!
I've already said it's snarky Thursday, I'm liable to say anything.

My father is a preacher and (at the time I was in the Girl Scouts) I attended a "church" school. So my whole life is filled with religious hooha, even when I'm OUTSIDE Of the building. :)

But to answer your question, I dont recall the Girl Scouts being filled with more hooha than the rest of the school day. They did make us hike up a big giant mountain when I was 8 and they only thing that got my lazy, Nickelodeon watching behind UP that mountain was my constant refrain of "Help me Lord Jesus!" so I guess you could count that. ha ha

What I DO remember was an organization that taught young girls to appreciate and respect other ethnicities and religious faiths ....... and to honor the almighty god of consumer driven capitalism!!! Gotta LOVE them Thin Mints!

30. My father was a preacher also
but never attended a religious school because they came after my time I guess. The only one we had back then was a Catholic school in a neighboring town, and the Catholic kids in my town even went to public school with me.

My father would never have allowed me to attend a Catholic school or (my opinion) belong to any organization that pushed a religion different from his own. Anyway, I got enough religion attending four church services a week regularly and eight when he was holding revivals during the times when the mines (his other job) were down.

Out of curiosity, did you get called the PK and passed judgment on for being one? If so, wasn't that fun?

19. Actually, nothing like the Boy Scouts.
The Boy Scouts are homophobic and forbid gay men from being scout leaders and also forbid atheists and agnostics from joining a troop.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts_of_America_membership_controversies

The Girl Scouts are welcoming of all girls, with anti-discrimination policies protecting leaders' sexuality or religion. They did this in direct response to the Boy Scouts anti-gay stance.

22. I got out of the Scouts because my troop was full of favoritism and shit with promotions
You did not advance and certainly didn't get Eagle unless our Scoutmaster liked you.

I will say that my troop, though, didn't do all the religious crap. They also openly said, many times, that the national policy of banning gays was bullshit and that they would not abide by it.

I had some great experiences when I was a Scout, mostly because of fellow Scouts. We also had a Leadership Patrol that I was on, and we organized basically all of the camping trips, fundraisers, etc. Especially after our Scoutmaster left and then they never really appointed an actual replacement.

Anyway, I think most of people's experiences with Boy Scouts is based on their individual troop. Of course, you might not want your kids joining an organization that promotes that crap you mentioned even if the troop doesn't give a crap about it.

28. When I was in scouting in the late 70's
When I was in scouting in the late 70's, there was never any real discussion of religion, or even reference to it that I can remember. We concentrated all of our hoo-hah on scouting hoo-hah, camping hoo-hah fire making hoo-hah, and a few bits of literary hoo-hah, and some jr. grade philosophical hoo-hah.

I joined the Brownies just so I could get my wings, and then I quit. Of course I hated the teacher that was over the scouts, but I think I was just anti group think even back then. Belonging to the group for a month was satisfying enough for me. ;)

25. Michelle Obama Becomes National Honorary President of Girl Scouts of the USA
http://www.girlscouts.org/news/news_releases/2009/michelle_obama.asp

October 8, 2009

New York, N.Y. – Girl Scouts of the USA is pleased to announce that First Lady Michelle Obama has agreed to serve as its Honorary National President.

"It is my great pleasure to serve as Honorary National President of Girl Scouts," said Mrs. Obama. "With their innovative new programming, ground-breaking research, and emphasis on service and leadership, Girl Scouts is preparing the women of tomorrow to be a positive force for change – in their own lives, their communities, and across the globe."

In accepting the position, Mrs. Obama takes her place in a tradition stretching back to 1917, when First Lady Edith B. Wilson became the first Honorary National President of the Girl Scout movement. Since then, each successive First Lady has served in this post.

Girl Scouts plan to work with the First Lady on areas of mutual concern, such as healthy living, public service and leadership.

"From bullying to obesity to concern over the economy, our nation's girls are facing significant challenges," said Kathy Cloninger, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of the USA. "Girl Scouts is excited to work with the First Lady's office to ensure that all girls can overcome the challenges they face, and that they have the skills, resources and opportunities they need to become strong, independent young leaders."

"Girl Scouts can help girls from every background develop their self-confidence and leadership ability, and encourage them to make a difference in the world," said Connie L. Lindsey, Girl Scouts of the USA National Board Chair. "The First Lady is a passionate, brilliant and inspirational woman – a fantastic role model for girls across the country. We look forward to an active and mutually rewarding partnership on issues important to girls' lives."

When they laid the signup sheets on the teacher's desk and told us girls to come up and get a form, all the Brownie sheets were gone by the time I made it through the throng. That's how I became a Bluebird.
