Lieberman was the reason Gore lost.. seriously he was..

Oh the right wing had a field day, but I remember so many people who were okay with Gore, but there was something about Lieberman that just did not inspire them one bit..

He has a smarmy gollum quality.. There are times, that who you pick for VP can really impact on if you will win or not.

That was one of them.

Lieberman was worse in some ways, but Edwards gave me the willies also. I held my nose and voted due to the VP choices.

But I agree that he did Gore no good at all. Edwards was Kerry's running mate.

That decision should be studied by every Democratic politician who thinks the way to win is to pander to a voting bloc rather than convincing people to support your ideas.

The only thing in this sad story that's been proven again and again is that a vote for Nader is a wasted vote.

The Democrats never took the threat of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Karl Rove seriously. That's how they were able to steal the election in Florida with help from Katherine Harris, disenfranchise the black voters who could have turned the tide, and send James Baker with an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court, where all the friends of Bush's dad knew just how to vote.

Gore won the election. The reason he didn't become president was Katherine Harris.

Without Joementum I think Bush would have won Florida for real.

From the perspective of a black presidency it is hard to remember that an orthodox jewish VP was a big deal nine years ago, but it was.

I heard in 2000 that Gore's short list for VP included John Kerry. I agree with you that the Gore/Kerry ticket probably loses Florida legitimately, but Kerry's over-the-border strength delivers New Hampshire, which in real life went narrowly for Bush. New Hampshire gives Gore the presidency even without Florida.

So, in that sense, Lieberman did lose it for Gore.

Who else could rationalize supporting Palin as vice president. THAT ALONE shows how he works. He would rather see the country fail than not get his way. THAT, my friends, is the sign of a traitor to this country.

Most dems didn't really care about Monica. Gore made too much of a deal about it. I don't know why. Where were his pollsters? I don't think most Americans cared that much and anyway, if they did, they certainly didn't think Gore had anything to do with it!

Actually he won it fairly convincingly. Florida should have gone his way and would have if the rules had been followed.

Gore did make a mistake picking Lieberman though... that's true.

Even though Cheney was wrong on the issues, he still slapped Lieberman around like a tetherball in the VP debate. Cheney was confident and quick with his answers, whereas Lieberman sounded like a retard, and anyone on the fence waiting for that debate to decide things for him and her wasn't likely to go Democrat after Lieberman sounded like Jimmy on South Park against Cheney.

For the record, though, I think Edwards was a lot more harmful to Kerry than Lieberman was to Gore.

Yet another example of the folly of caving to reactionaries.

Lieberman was really the first major sitting Democrat to wag his finger at Bill Clinton and claim the moral high ground. By bringing Quisling Joe onto the ticket, Gore was distancing himself from Clinton, and the rest of the campaign was a dismal series of acquescences to the reactionaries.

Clinton was popular at the time, and blowing off an asset was simply foolish. Arkansas could have sealed that election even with outright theft in Florida.

he basically agreed with everything Cheney said, I knew he was a very weak link in the campaign right there because his true colors were showing. I got a lot of flack here at DU for saying so, that he couldn't be trusted, from DUers who thought that Lieberman was a painted saint. Well, here I stand having to say I told you so again. However, I think Katherine Harris and the voting machine cheat in Florida had a lot more to do with Gore losing than Lieberman. They put enough doubt in the election returns to enable the Supreme Court to step in and appoint Bush President. In a way though I am happy that it kept him from ever having a chance of becoming President. If Gore had served his two terms, Joe would have been next. :scared:
