1. Having American airmen or soldiers end up unsupported on enemy soil

Yesterday

seems to always stir up some deep fear at home.

Lots of enemy combatants and innocent civilians killed in some foreign land?

Response: "Oh well, it is a war after all!"

Airman gets shot down and maybe still alive in the jungles of North Vietnam/ cold war Russia/ Iran?

Response: "Oh my goodness, how terrible!"

Why the difference?
Is there a scale on which the value of lives is measured differently, depending on who it is?
