2. And when I visited the USSR in the late '80s with my grandmother and her peace group

The Russian people were obsessed with keeping the peace after the horrific time that they had during WWII fought on their own land. We visited with numerous other peace groups, there were statues and plaques everywhere remembering those who were lost and calling for peace. They even had museums everywhere, including in the schools, so that the children would learn and not forget. I wonder what happened to all those remembrances now.
