In fact, Buddhism in China generally takes on characteristics quite foreign to Western conceptions. It has sprouted apocalyptic millennial cults, such as the White Lotus, which have given rise to major armed rebellions in the last few Imperial centuries. Militia movements, such as the 'Big Swords' and 'Red Spears' (no relation to the Communists), were prominent early in the twentieth century, raised and led by Buddhist monks, operating to defend localities from bandits, and against the Japanese in Manchuria.
