Social Security didn't start out covering who it does now - kids whose parents died, etc. That took decades to expand
It's similar to those on the right who are convinced that shutting down Planned Parenthood is a simple solution to "end abortion," because it makes sense on paper, and gives them a demon to blame, when it's actually a very complex issue. It's become dogma, despite the expertise of those who actually understand the societal, personal and political forces that contribute unplanned pregnancy, and how the problem would be made worse by simply shutting down Planned Parentood. Even GOP polticians who know better continue to bang the drum against Planned Parenthood because it's now political and tribal heresy to speak the truth about the catastrophic damage of shutting down Planned Parenthood and "shifting all that money to adoption fees."
Those who see Planned Parenthood as a dragon to be slayed believe "reality endorses" their simple solution any time there is the rare abortion that leads to complicatins, because to someone with a hammer, everything looks like a nail. They shun experts who don't confirm their bias.
Bernie attacks anyone who dares to disagree with his math - no matter how expert and unbiased they are. Not a good trait for a POTUS.
