1. My ex-husband's uncle owned a small grocery store in a predominantly poor black neighborhood

outside of Philadelphia. This was forty-five years ago. He bought the store when his job as a milk delivery person disappeared. He felt terrible about the prices he had to charge because he was not big enough to buy in bulk. He scoured the surrounding area for the cheapest places to buy foods wholesale. He pretty much let everybody run a tab, because he got to know his customers, and forgave tabs when he could. And he knew that his customers did not have cars, they could not "shop the sales" if they could not get to the sales. He only stayed in business for a few years, it was too hard. And he needed to support his family.
