Top Intel Dem: Spy agency briefing on Russia hacks 'contentious,' 'heated'

House Homeland Security Chairman Mike McCaul (R-Texas) said he did pick up new information in the briefing, but wouldn't discuss it. Asked how he viewed Russia right now, he only answered, "That’s a great question."

Some Democrats were specifically upset with Comey after the briefing.

Tim Walz (D-Minn.), ranking member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, openly questioned the bureau chief's impartiality.

“Rep. Walz has very serious concerns following today’s meeting with FBI Director Comey this morning," said Sara Severs, Walz's deputy chief of staff. "He has serious questions about his ability to act in the impartial manner you would expect from the Director of the FBI.”

In a separate briefing on Thursday, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and other Democrats lit into Comey over his handling of Clinton’s email investigation and announcement of new investigatory steps right before the election, sources familiar with the exchange said.

Comey was pressed on when he new about the emails, leading some Democrats to believe he contradicted himself on the chain of events, those sources said.
