76. Try to imagine yourself in the position of rust belt voters for a minute

Let's say you have a family to take care of and you lost your job and you are competing with 50 other people for a minimum wage job at McDonalds that is not enough to pay your bills. Some of the people you are competing with have college degrees. This is a REALITY for many people. I had to leave a rural area for lack of jobs. One of the candidates doesn't even come to your area and the other one sounds just as pissed off as you are and they say they are going to bring back jobs and put an end to the trade deals that are killing the jobs. Yes, he is saying a lot of things you don't agree with and you aren't comfortable with but he came to listen.

That is pretty much what happened. If you have one candidate, as obnoxious as they are, speaking about what you NEED and one not saying anything and one has been smeared for over 20 years to look horrible then you are thinking you are voting for the lesser of the two evils. So they chose the one that at least talked like he would help the economy.

For the alt right supporters it was definitely about race, yes. But for many more it really was about the economy and jobs.
