(29,257 posts)I am a translator, but it is not well understood by those who only speak one language that, in the process of translation -particularly when the languages are as unrelated as Japanese and English - that it is much more like writing than it is what people imagine translation to be (a sort of process of replacing words). A translated work is actually more of an expression of the translator than it is the audience.
A translator must be a good writer and serve several masters: The original author and their intent, as well as the target audience. It is a process that involves a deep empathetic understanding of the way in which the source content is received by its readers in the original language, and then it demands that the translator find a way to try to reproduce the same set of feelings in the target audience.
My work has been enjoyed by millions of people and received high praise. Thanks for asking.
