Adidas Stirs Controversy with 1972 Olympic Shoe Remake [View all]

German sportswear giant Adidas has unveiled a remake of shoes worn during the 1972 Munich Olympics, an event forever stained by the brutal murder of Israeli athletes.

As dawn broke on September 5, 1972, eight members of the notorious Black September terrorist organization stormed an Olympic Village housing the Israeli team. They immediately killed wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg and weightlifter Yossef Romano. The remaining nine Israeli team members were taken hostage.

Seeking leverage, the terrorists demanded Israel to release 234 dangerous Arabs from prison, as well as two German terrorists. Negotiations continued throughout the day, with the hostage crisis playing out on live television worldwide. A poorly executed rescue attempt by German law enforcement prompted the terrorists to murder their remaining nine captives.

Adidas, whose founders Adolf and Rudolf Dassler were Nazi party affiliates, has also made a contentious decision by selecting antisemitic supermodel Bella Hadid as its representative for this year’s Olympic Games in France.
