I read that US intelligence in the late 70s was trying to track illegal military weapons transfers internationally to dictators and political strongmen who may become a threat to US interests. One thread they got on led to an element within the Catholic church. The weapons were just a mechanism for money laundering that the church element was profiting from. The intel folks were pulled off of this thread and I think the State Dept took it up . Never saw Opus Dei mentioned but it was clearly a within the church operation by all reports and not the only one of its kind.
