1. If you don't want tourists, I would recommend you stay away from Grand Canyon at that time of year.

I would even stay away from Zion and Bryce. They can all be like Disneyworld at that time of you.

You might want to look at Grand Staircase Escalante-National Monument in Utah. It is stunningly beautiful and much less visited. There are lots of great hikes and other things to do. Just driving through it is utterly amazing. The Highway 12 drive is particularly stunning.

If you head to Four Corners, you will also see less tourists and can go to Arches and Garden of the Gods.

Sounds like a great trip (and to one of my favorite areas in the whole country).

Edited to add: Look into the National Park Pass. If you do decide to go to one of the bigger parks, it will save you time and money.
