I did the same a few years ago, and met someone at a backpacking hostel, and we traveled until we didn't.

I highly recommend Kanchanaburi! We spent 9 days there, and it was a great mix. It wasn't too hectic like Bangkok.. There's busy sections, and less busy sections. Lots of places to rent scooters for 150 baht/24 hours... Another friend from Australia visited, and we ended up finding some non-tourist spots just by driving wherever.
