Embedding fonts is important, because it can effect pagination when Amazon converts to pdf. It's an option in the Save As menu in word. I describe the process in a post up thread.

I recommend letting Word create the TOC. You can format it as you like after it is created. Word will ensure that the pagination is correct.

KDB is far from perfect. You need a thorough understanding of Word in the final formatting checks, since changes have to be made in Word and reuploaded. Many pitfalls exist. Don't use tabs in your document, for example. Use Word's paragraph formatting for first line indents and space after paragraphs.
