Anyone else ever read GOING WRONG by Ruth Rendell? ***SPOILERS *** [View all]

I am re-reading it after many years. From the first time I read it, I was struck by how the author made Guy's twisted thinking make sense to the reader. I mean, you knew he was...disturbed, but you could see why he thought as he did.

But I can see more and more how Leonora was equally disturbed. Why didn't she get a restraining order against Guy if she was scared of him? Why in the world would she invite Guy to William's flat to have a meal with both of them? What motive could she POSSIBLY have had for that?

I know there are some women who really like to have two men vying for them. (And undoubtedly there are men who like to have two women vying for them. And so on.) But Leonara's behavior seems despicable as well as disturbed. Guy isn't a very likeable character, but the way she plays with his emotions is...despicable. This time, as I read it, I wonder how long her marriage with William lasted, considering her issues.
