1. I have trouble buying into the 'its for a good cause' line.

Surely, there are ways of raising money for recreational activities for the troops without installing mini-casinos on bases. Service members are especially prone to addictions of any kind, since they are usually isolated from their families that would otherwise serve as a support-group.
The armed forces should focus on treating addictions, not creating opportunities to indulge them.
