The reason this paper wasn't refuted in the news media is because America's journalists, particularly those working in the corporate media, are herd animals. They don't think for themselves, they follow fads, and the ones that are willing to break away from the herd and risk putting in some hours and skull-sweat to blaze new trails are few and far between.

Moreover, our journalistic establishment has been successfully buffaloed by the right wing. They're so afraid of showing "liberal bias" that they'd sooner break potty training than break away from the editors, publishers, and fellow reporters that credulously repeat the tripe being fed to them from the right wing's propaganda organs.
