1. I was an avid college-age McGovern supporter and canvasser in 1972, and I remember how devastating these events were.

It totally took the wind out of McGovern's sails, and he never recovered the momentum that would have led to a very different outcome (at least a decent EV total, if not a win). To add insult to injury, Eagleton was an alum of the college I was attending, and he was invited back as a guest speaker the following Spring. He was treated as a returning hero, rather than as someone whose lack of honesty undermined a cause that most students and faculty had ardently supported. The celebrity factor won out, and it took me a long time to forgive him. So it goes.
