3. what works against this in peppers is that don't seem to continue to ripen off the vine

Not sure why - maybe something to do with the tomato structure vs the pepper...

I anticipate having little to no garden at all next year - cross country spring driving trip to visit each daughter!

It's fine - I - and my yard - could use a break!
