The stuff hasn't been either cheap or widely available in the US pretty much since the end of the Depression. Maybe she grew up oiverseas, it's both cheap and available in some countries.

Poor folks here have to get it in hot dogs, cheap luncheon meats, or if they keep and butcher their own meat animals.
