2. I've been to the USSR, I'm guessing things were better then since Gorbachev was promoting more progressive policies

And Americans were welcome, despite the people's fear and hatred of Reagan whose pressure on Gorbachev caused the Russian hardliners to scale back Gorbachev's progressive policies - glasnost and perestroika, openness and restructuring. Putin was also KGB.
