New England governors unite for nuclear [View all]

This is somewhat surprising:

New England governors unite for nuclear

The governors of all six New England states have issued a joint statement outlining their regional commitment to exploring advanced nuclear energy technologies while continuing to support the safe, affordable, and reliable operation of the region's existing nuclear facilities.

The governors signing the joint statement include Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut, Governor Janet Mills of Maine, Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts, Governor Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island, and Governor Phil Scott of Vermont....

This a bipartisan crowd, which is also surprising; believe it or not the Governor of Vermont is a Republican, a nearly extinct variety to be sure, a liberal Republican. (I thought Jacob Javits was the last free ranging liberal Republican and that the species went extinct after he died. I'm surprised naturalists don't rush up to Vermont to see what that's all about. It's kind of like the Ivory Billed Woodpecker; do they exist or not?) Apparently New Hampshire also has a Republican Governor, with Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island having Democrats.

Vermont drove the carbon intensity of New England higher when shutting the Vermont Yankee plant, something I personally regarded as tragic. Maine Yankee and Pilgrim are also historic reactors that closed.

A little further on the article continues:

...The statement outlines two key next steps. First, the governors are directing their respective state energy offices to explore opportunities to ensure the continued safe, affordable, and reliable operation of the region's existing nuclear generation facilities in coordination with regional transmission organization ISO New England, the facilities' owners, federal agencies, and other state and regional stakeholders.

Second, the governors are directing state energy agencies to take steps to explore deployment of advanced nuclear generation in states and communities that express a willingness to host such resources. This includes exploring innovative financing structures, federal funding and financial support opportunities, public-private partnerships, and regulatory designs for advanced nuclear energy that will protect consumers, help meet the region's energy needs, and enable New England to capture job growth and economic development opportunities from the deployment of new nuclear technologies with advanced safety systems...

New England is very much dependent on dangerous natural gas for power generation.

I checked to see if it was possible to finish Seabrook 2, but no, it's too far gone. (A great ethical failure in my life is that I was among those idiots who fought the Seabrook reactors. I was a pretty stupid kid.)

I do hope Ed Markey doesn't have a stroke after hearing this news.
