This Massive Hydrogen Vehicle Just Conquered the Saudi Alps. Yes, That’s a Thing

AutoPost | Tyler Park | August 6, 2025

Hyundai Motor has demonstrated the potential for establishing a hydrogen mobility ecosystem in Neom, Saudi Arabia’s futuristic smart city project.

The automaker released footage on Monday showcasing its hydrogen mobility driving tests conducted in Neom’s Trojena area. From May 17 to 27, Hyundai successfully tested its Universe Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) on a route connecting Neom’s central business district to the Trojena base camp, situated at an elevation of 2,080 meters (6,824 feet).

Trojena, a key component of the Neom project, presents a challenging environment with its mountainous and desert terrain. The area features elevations exceeding 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) along with continuous steep slopes and curves. These conditions are particularly demanding for the Universe FCEV, which has a higher center of gravity and a longer braking distance than typical passenger vehicles.

To address the reduced oxygen levels at high altitudes, which affect fuel cell power production, Hyundai Motor equipped the Universe FCEV with its proprietary high-altitude compensation map technology. This system continuously monitors the environment to optimize fuel cell efficiency...more
