China has a stranglehold on the world supply of gallium. It is a critical element with huge applications particularly in semiconductors.

Boron trichloride the main reactant is not pleasant stuff, but is certainly utilized on an industrial scale already.

The process will generate significant hydrochloric acid, but so does the synthesis of silanes.
